The Rolex Ref. 5100 was the first Rolex to feature a sapphire crystal and a quickset date function – both now brand standards. Ironically, this timepiece is celebrated for what it didn’t have: an automatic movement. The Ref. 5100’s Quartz movement was the first of its kind for Rolex and the series was limited to just 1,000 pieces, each made entirely of precious metals. In 1970, when the Ref. 5100 was introduced, a watch’s price was very much determined by the accuracy of its timekeeping. With a battery-powered movement, the Ref. 5100 was the most accurate chronometer Rolex had ever produced, instantly making it their most expensive piece.
